looking with wide eyes

Sometimes it is interesting to take a few steps away from yourself and to take a long look at who you are, who you have become. Some believe that they know themselves, but it is very hard to see yourself fully, for all that you are, without removing yourself from yourself. It is easy to spend time criticising the stranger on the street or the actions of friends and family members. When doing this we take the basic facts and characteristics of situations and look at it from only our own perspective. I have spent a lot of years looking at the actions of others and quickly judging them, stating that “I would never do that” or that if it were me “I would have done things differently.

I have been challenged a lot over the past few months and am slowly learning more about myself and about others as a result. It is easy to look at a situation and place judgement on it; however, it is not easy to fully understand a situation. Even when we are personally faced with challenges we naturally struggle, this is because they are challenges. They test our abilities and personal strength, making us feel poked and prodded at- like we have to prove ourselves. Failure to successfully face a challenge makes us feel weak and defeated, while to come through a challenge with success makes us feel strong and powerful.

It is easy to judge others; it is not easy to be judged by others. It is easy to criticize the decisions of others; however, when faced with challenges, decisions can be the hardest test of all.
