10 Things to Consider when driving across Canada

  1. Just like you can't judge a book by its cover, you can't judge a motel without taking a look at its rooms. However, there are exceptions.
  2. In Canada, being old, having a mustache, and driving a pick-up truck is 'a thing' that can easily be turned into a fun betting game as a means for entertainment.
  3. It's fun to talk like people from the prairies. Words like road, flood, go, slow, washout, and closed are fun to use. For example, "because of the washouts the roads closed so we have to go around."
  4. It is easy to quickly lose track of which time zone you are in, what time it is, the day of the week and even which province you're in.
  5. If you can't see, don't pass. Likewise, if you are tired, stop for a rest. Don't forget to stretch.
  6. Leave the GPS at home unless you want to end up very far from where you intend on going, stranded in the middle of no where.
  7. 11.5 hour drives can seem half the time when accompanied by snacks, good music, company that has a sense of humor, and caffeine.
  8. If you think there is road kill on  or on the side of the road, there is no need to confirm your theory. There is something and it is dead.
  9. Don't tickle the driver.
  10. When looking for a place to stay for the night, remember that the term "resort" is one that is used very loosely.
